Background of the project:
Since its founding in 1920, a central pillar of SCI policy and deeds is to promote peace and mutual understanding. We do it in a multitude of ways and in many different areas. Unfortunately, the world today is still plagued by manifold conflicts, violence, exploitation and social injustice. In this situation many people feel uncertain of why these conflicts exist and what needs to be done to solve them. Indeed, there are many different interpretations of what peace really means or how to promote peace in a positive, creative way at individual or local level.
Aims and objectives:
The aim of this seminar is to bring together a group of 12-15 active volunteers from Germany and the Balkans, in order to exchange ideas and experiences on the main topic as well as to further educate, train & empower them with methods how to develop and implement self-conceived awareness-raising and educational workshops on peace issues.
Besides that, the training will also provide the opportunity to exchange views on current developments in Germany and the Balkans and also have some fun together.
Main topics:
Peace, conflict resolution, human rights’ violations (stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, sexism, homophobia, romaphobia, anti-Semitism, islamophobia, xenophobia etc.), according to interests of participants.
Concept of the project:
The program of the event will be divided into the following main elements:
− Deepening knowledge on the main topics of the training (group work, games & exercises, inputs by experts, project visit)
− Training: extensive preparation on how to prepare and implement self-designed workshops
− Practice: try out the newly adopted skills and methods in small groups
− Since the 5th of December is celebrated as the international volunteers’ day, the group will have the opportunity to celebrate it.
All participants will be expected and stimulated to contribute to the discussions. They will all be asked to present their own examples of conflicts in their own country. After the training is completed we hope that the trained promoters will subsequently contribute to activities in their home country to promote peace and non-violence.
Participant’s profile:
All participants selected for this project must meet the following criteria:
• be 18 years old or older
• be able to work in English language
• be interested in the training topics and have strong motivation to act as multiplier in the field of promoting peace work;
• commit to implement the learned knowledge and skills in practice back home;
• commit to report thoroughly the content of the project to other activists of sending organisation;
• commit to actively participate
Please note that there will be opportunities to visit the city, but that this is not a “getting to know Berlin’s night-life” project.
Financial and practical conditions of participation:
Food, accommodation and training costs will be covered 100% by SCI-D.
The volunteers cover their travel expenses.
Sending fee: 300 MKD
