Project place: Nürnberg, Germany

Project dates: 14th – 21st of June

Application deadline: 30th of April

Disclaimer: We are still waiting for the funding of the program to get approved. The implementation on the project depends on this decision which we will be informed about in the end of April. We will contact the participants as soon as we get the confirmation for the funding.

Background of the project

International Peace and voluntary work lives from the fruitful getting together and cultural exchange of people from different regions and backgrounds. Regular meetings, trainings, seminars and workcamps where people can exchange experiences and ideas form the basis for the peace work of SCI (Service Civil International). As a consequence of this need for exchange comes a higher need for traveling and transportation. At the moment, many of the travel distances are done by plane, which has high ecological impacts leading to ecological devastation, climate change and increased social inequality.

Main Aims

In this project, we want to look at how much and what kind of mobility is necessary and possible in order to do international peace and voluntary work successfully. Following this, we want to develop ideas on how mobility in an international – and especially in a European context – can be made socially and ecologically more sustainable. The project will be accompanied by the following questions: What are the ecological and social impacts of global mobility? What is our role as individuals and as part of European and international civil society in this context? How widely can we engage with these issues and change our behaviour and structures? What is possible for us as organisations in a broader context with current structural inequality and non-sustainable mobility?

Activities

The project consists of four events. The first event “Ready for take-off?” is a training focusing on the following topics: We will reflect on the connection between international voluntary work, mobility and climate change, talk about the structures that lead to an increase in mobility and discuss existing approaches of the different actors (Industry, Science, Politics, Civil Society) to a more sustainable global mobility. We will also think about alternative ways to reduce emissions from mobility and think about our personal utopias on the topic. We will initially reflect on methods and workshops for raising awareness and education on the main topics during the subsequent cycling projects.

The following events will be promoting awareness-raising and educational projects by bike, taking place in Germany in August, and in Greece in September respectively. During these events, we will build on the content of the first training and travel to different workcamps and visit local activist initiatives by bicycle to run workshops on climate and mobility and exchange ideas & experiences. You will be able to participate in one of these as well as the last event. This will be a seminar in Austria in October where we will collect the knowledge gained in the previous activities to create a toolkit on voluntary work, mobility and climate change. This toolkit will include non-formal education methods on the topic as well as advice on how to run more sustainable projects.

It is not mandatory to participate in all of the events. However, we strongly encourage you to take part in the other events as well. Participants from the first event will be given priority in selection for the following events.  We will be 23 participants from different European countries (Austria, Greece, Germany, Poland, Sweden, France, Spain, Serbia, Slovenia, North Macedonia and Italy).

Germany, 27th July – 10th August
Greece, 6th – 20th September

Content: The study camps will consist of one preparational part with a short training on climate, peace, global mobility and non-formal-education, and a workshop phase, which will happen as a bike tour travelling from workcamp to workcamp, camping, discovering slow travel as a sustainable way of transportation.  Here we will visit workcamps of SCI and do workshops on climate and mobility. During the training phase, we will also visit local places connected to global mobility as well as campaigners for sustainable mobility locally and globally. You will have the possibility to participate in one of the two study camps.

4)“Landing and spreading”- seminar
around 12th – 18th October, Austria

Content: In the last activity, we will connect the knowledge and experience gained in the training and the study camps to create a toolkit with non-formal education methods on climate and mobility in the context of international peace work. We will also develop guidelines to reduce carbon emissions and other climate impacts due to travelling to (international) voluntary programs. Besides, we will discuss and work on travel policies within SCI and the idea of SCI-internal carbon offsetting.

5)Bringing it into action

After the main events are over, it’s time to bring the studied topics and developed methods into action. You will support your sending organisations in their camp coordinator trainings and support the coordinators in implementing activities on sustainable global mobility in their volunteer projects.

Methods

We’re going to use a broad variety of non-formal education methods, such as world cafe, snowball discussions, research, silent exhibition, simulation games, theatre, visual harvesting, arts, energizers, role games, team-building exercises and more. There will also be projects visits to local initiatives.
