ABOUT THE PROJECT

Research in the EU and the US has established the link between a deficient sexuality education and higher rate of teenage pregnancy, of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) and the perpetuation of gender stereotypes (Strasburger VC, Brown SS, 2014). Sexual education leads to more responsible behavior, healthier and happier lives. However, sexuality, including sexual health education, is an essential but insufficiently discussed topic among youth on a European level. The EU trusts its member states with developing national policies on sexual education. But not every country is keen on changing its traditions. A wide diversity of social, cultural and behavioral factors across European cultures has led to differing approaches to sexuality education. In SEE countries, the topic is not included in school curriculum or if it is, with as little attention as possible. On the other end sexuality education is mandatory in Germany and present in schools since the late 1960s.
.
The level of inconsistency in quality, frequency of delivery and of relevance of sexuality education and information across Europe varies immensely and affects in particular youth, 20-30 years old. Very vulnerable are minorities, Roma, refugees and youth living in poor urban and rural areas. This can have grave consequences in a world in which mobility is both promoted & facilitated. Against this background of sexual health education in different European countries we explore the model of holistic sexuality health education and its 7 elements in order to equip youth with knowledge, skills, attitudes & values they need to determine and enjoy their sexuality and to encourage the view of sexuality within the context of emotional and social development.
.
The project aims to provide participants with accurate information on sexual and reproductive health, dispel myths related to sexuality, develop life skills such as critical thinking, communication and self-development, ability to ask questions, open-mindedness and respect for self and others, positive attitude toward their sexual and reproductive health. Participants will have a chance to acquire networking skills and immediately put them in use, as well as practice and enhance their creative & teamwork skills during the project. We aim to create safe environment in which participants will be encouraged to formulate and speak out their opinions, engage in open discussion and exchange experiences. This will allow them to see the greater context and potential to apply new ideas in their work and improve and enrich their non-formal education initiatives. A priority will be given to network and explore possible ways of cooperation, create working groups and joint initiatives in future projects. This will enable enhancing the international dimension of partner organizations and promotion of cooperation and mobility between participating countries.
