From September 15th to 22nd, 2024, Gurra Aliu and Erdi Shahini had the privilege of participating in the 42nd YEU Convention titled “YEU Developing YOUth – Shaping Chameleons of Tomorrow,” held in the beautiful town of Mollina, Spain. Alongside participants from ten different countries, they embarked on a transformative experience focused on enhancing youth work through the innovative Chameleon Leadership methodology. This annual event, organized by Youth for Exchange and Understanding (YEU), has been a milestone in fostering international and intercultural dialogue since its inception in 1981.
The theme of this year’s convention revolved around flexibility, adaptability, and mindfulness in leadership—essential qualities that empower youth workers to make a greater impact in their communities. Throughout the week, they engaged in dynamic sessions designed to strengthen their skills in inclusive leadership, human rights advocacy, and the rule of law. They explored the intersections of digital youth work and how to utilize digital platforms to promote youth rights effectively. This was complemented by interactive discussions and workshops that encouraged them to reflect on their roles as youth workers and the responsibilities they carry in an ever-evolving world.
One of the highlights of the convention was the chance to participate in the University of Youth and Development 2024, an international platform that brought together youth-led and youth-oriented organizations from across Europe and beyond. The theme, “#For The Culture of Human Rights and the Rule of Law,” provided a unique context for networking, cooperation, and peer-to-peer education. It was inspiring to see so many young leaders, each bringing their unique perspectives and experiences, coming together to brainstorm and collaborate on solutions for some of today’s most pressing issues.
Throughout the week, they were also introduced to the concept of “Chameleon Leadership”—a methodology that emphasizes adapting to the needs of diverse groups while maintaining a strong sense of democratic values. This approach was particularly eye-opening as it challenged them to rethink traditional leadership styles and consider how they, as youth workers, can better support young people in their local communities, especially those with fewer opportunities.
During their time in Mollina, they had the pleasure of experiencing the rich cultural heritage of Spain, and enjoying the warm hospitality of their hosts. From the delicious local cuisine to the vibrant atmosphere of the event, every moment was a reminder of the power of intercultural exchange. They also had the opportunity to participate in “Coffee with…”, an on-site edition of YEU’s informal discussion series, where they shared their thoughts on youth activism and leadership in an engaging and open environment.
The week concluded with a reflection on what they had learned, both personally and collectively. As they look back on this incredible journey, they are filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such an enriching experience. It was not just about gaining knowledge, but also about building lasting connections and fostering a spirit of collaboration that will continue to inspire them in their work as youth leaders.
“We would like to thank CID for supporting us in attending this event. Our time at the YEU Convention has equipped us with new skills and perspectives that we are excited to bring back to our community. We are looking forward to sharing what we’ve learned and contributing to the development of youth work in North Macedonia and beyond.” shared with us Erdi and Rrona
